The Municipality of Terschelling is best prepared for the arrival of the electric car. The island hits number 1 at the ‘Charging infrastructure for Dutch Municipalities 2017’ ranking of Living Lab Smart Charging. The list looks at the number of available charging points per 1000 vehicles.

Thanks to a project from the Municipality of Terschelling, GreenFlux and WattCar, there are now dozens of electric shared cars on the island. Since the start in 2015, 3300 people now use the WattCar’s and more than 140,000 trips have already been made. Thanks to the GreenFlux smart charging technology, with which the charging stations on the island are equipped, the available power is cleverly distributed over the charging stations. As a result, there was no need to invest in larger connections. Because of the link that can be made with solar and wind energy in the future, Terschelling is leading for the Netherlands and the rest of the world.
